Critiquing Photography

Descriptive: My image is descriptive because it is simply describing what this dessert looks like.

Explanatory: My image is explanatory because it shows how to properly wire a disconnect for a garage door.

Interpretative: Cindy Sherman's photo is interpretative because the viewer can come to their own conclusions about what is occurring to the scared looking person in the image.

Aesthetically Evaluative: This image by Annie Leibovitz is aesthetically evaluative because the head on composition, black and white lighting, and the intriguing jewelry as a focal point is very visually appealing.

Ethically Evaluative: My photograph is ethically evaluative because it brings into question whether power plants are worth the harm to the environment.

Theoretical: Andre Kertesz's image is theoretical because it approaches photography of the human body in a different way than most other photographs.

Multimodal Presentation

Synopsis of Multimodal Presentation:

For this presentation, I selected the photographer and film director Sam Taylor-Wood. She began exhibiting fine art in the early 1990s, winning the Illy Cafe Prize for Most Promising Young Artist at the Venice Biennale in 1997. Her work has been exhibited worldwide including The Hirshhorn Museum, The Museums of Contemporary Art, The National Gallery of Modern Art, and many more. She sets herself apart by photographing well-known subjects, like celebrities, to evoke emotions and get viewers to think about concepts like death, time, and gravity. The images I have chosen to review show variety of Sam Taylor-Wood's work, including time-lapse videos and portraits.

My New Perception of Photography:

By analyzing the work of Sam Taylor-Wood, I have gained a new perspective of photography. A lot of her work centers around subjects who are photographed very often, but her work stands out from the others. She does not just use these subjects for publicity or personal gain, she creates fine art that evokes thoughts and emotions. She also uses creative and sometimes whimsical ideas to convey a message, which I find quite interesting. Previously, I thought that the best photographs are created when the subject is unique or something that is not normally photographed because it can be much more interesting. However, looking at Taylor-Wood's work I realized that this is not true, a well-known subject can be made fascinating by using skills such as creative, lighting, and composition.
