Emulating a Professional Photographer
For this assignment, I attempted to emulate the work of Sam Taylor-Wood. In her 'Escape Artist' series she took self-portraits showing herself levitating. I attempted to create a similar effect while also using myself as the subject of the image. In Taylor-Wood's work for GQ, she photographed Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird highlighting female athletes and their determination. I tried highlighting the same qualities using my sister as the subject, who is heavily involved in several sports. Finally, Taylor-Wood's work with Sarah Paulson is visually appealing due to the colors and composition she used. I tried emulating this image by finding interesting color combinations and making them pop on the subject.
Course Goals and Achievements
My goals for this course were to take better pictures on my phone by utilizing fundamentals, seeing the world around me in a more creative way, and expressing my ideas and thoughts through images. Overall, I definitely achieved my first two goals. Throughout the semester, I have taken images using my phone that I was very proud of because I used photography fundamentals such as composition and lighting. I also had to get creative with how I could use the world around me to highlight various things, such as complimentary colors. While I touched on my final goal somewhat throughout this course, I do think that I will be able to do this much more effectively moving forward given the tools and knowledge I now have.
