Multimodal Presentation Video: https://youtu.be/4DY3ZKyM5t0

While researching Sam Taylor-Wood, I learned that I should not shy away from subjects that are frequently photographed. In the past, I tried finding unique subjects to ensure that my images were interesting to viewers which could sometimes lead to frustration. However, Sam Taylor-Wood uses celebrities as her subjects, who are constantly photographed, and created interesting works of art that stand out. She did this by creatively using lighting, composition, and staging to enhance her ideas, which is something I want to focus more on moving forward.

"I think this presentation is really well done and does a great job of highlighting the photographer's most notable bodies of work! I really liked how you discussed the concepts that Lauren Greenfield brings into question through her work, like wealth and societal standards. Topics such as these can be controversial or uncomfortable for viewers, but I think this is what makes her work so interesting and important."

Hi Emma! I really loved your presentation and I think you picked great photos and videos from Sam Taylor Woods' works to include in it. One thing I think you did really well was describe the time lapse video depicting time and decay, it really helped me understand the message the artist was trying to get across. My favorite would have to be the men crying series because it was very emotional especially considering the sentiment that many men are told that they can't cry or show their emotions. The only thing that could have been better would be to use more of chapter 4 when looking at these works.

Hey Emma! I really enjoyed your multimodal presentation and I think you did a great job at choosing a variety of Sam Taylor Woods' work to share from videos to photographs for various reasons. One thing that I really enjoyed is that the artist you chose was a woman, which stuck out to me. I loved the use of ropes and removing them to get a certain effect as well as telling the subjects to cry. I think these are both very creative techniques and goes to show just how much you have to use your mind in the world of photography.

Hey! You did a great job on your presentation. I like that you talked about how she uses celebrities as subjects and how this is important in today's society where people look up to celebrities. I also think you critiqued and explained the images and techniques she used well. My favorite was the crying men series because men crying is very stigmatized. I think both Sam and Jeff's work has inspired me to use more emotions in my work going forward.

I think that you did an excellent job at showcasing a broad range of Sam-Taylor's Woods photography. You gave really good descriptions of the different images and your explanation of the meanings were detailed and thoughtful. My favorite image was "suspended self-portrait" because I thought it was really creative how the photographer created the illusion of floating upside down. I think the presentation could be stronger by utilizing chapter 4 more to give a better analysis of photographic techniques that were used.

Hi Emma - your presentation on Sam Taylor-Wood’s is effective in highlighting the emotional depth and conceptual themes in her work, such as mortality, time, and gravity, which she often explores through images of celebrities and time-lapse videos. The use of well-known subjects helps viewers connect to her themes on a personal level, encouraging reflection. While the presentation could delve deeper into her techniques or specific influences, it successfully introduces her style and thematic focus. Learning about Taylor-Wood’s work provides a fresh perspective on using portraiture to convey complex, abstract ideas, which could inspire a more thematic approach in future photography projects.

our presentation on Sam Taylor-Wood really brought out an artist of great depth through profound themes-like times of mortality and the human condition-on celebrity subjects. You put her work into context with background on her career and achievements, and also selected works that reflect her versatility.

What Went Well

The background provided of Taylor-Wood and the range of her various works, from time-lapse videos to portraits, facilitated a clear illustration of her unique approach and artistry in the thematic focus she brought forth, making it quite captivating.

What Could Be Done Better

Diving deeper into specific examples with detailed descriptions of her techniques, such as lighting and composition, could better illustrate the emotional impact of her work.

Relation to Chapter 4 of Criticizing Photographs

You worked well with the concepts in Chapter 4, particularly when you discussed her use of known subjects and broke down the meaning of the abstract themes in her piece. A bit more critical consideration would help to develop this more.

Commentary on Photographer's Work

Through her use of time-lapse and portraiture, Taylor-Wood is able to convey introspection and vulnerability, taking iconic faces and rendering them in such a way to remind viewers of the fleeting nature of life.

Emotional Resonance of the Piece

Her work brings a sense of humility and introspection; it demands that viewers look beyond superficial glamour into the depths of the message being put across.

Influence of Perception on Photography

The presentation has indeed changed the way I thought about photography and what it can be used for as a medium. Even those subjects considered mundane may bear depth if depicted creatively and with intent.

Future Influence on Personal Work

Inspired by Taylor-Wood, I’m motivated to explore deeper themes and emotions in my own photography, focusing on composition and lighting to transform everyday subjects into impactful art.

I think your presentation was very informative and interesting. Your presentation was very thoughtful and utilized Chapter 4 very well. Sam Taylor Woods work Still life stood out to me the most in the images you presented. I liked how her work showed what happened to the fruit as time went on. It reminded me of the work the photographer I chose did, Uta Barth. I also liked the variety that Sam Taylor Woods photographs. The still life and then the celebrities were both beautifully captured.

I found your presentation to be very informative. The reasoning for the choices of images was well-explained and descriptions of the images were detailed. I think it is very interesting how Sam Taylor Woods uses commonly known subjects to highlight in her work. Using celebrities draws viewers into her work but her composition choices allows the viewers to see the subject through a new perspective. I found the "Crying Men" series of images to be particularly successful in portraying celebrities in a new light.
